NON-LEAGUE: A cracking FA Vase tie for Peterborough Sports, derby day for Star, battle of unbeaten teams for Tulips

Peterborough Sports head a clutch of local clubs into FA Vase action tomorrow (September 24) with a humdinger of a second qualifying round tie at Mildenhall.

Sports head the United Counties Premier Division and Mildenhall lead the same level Eastern Counties Premier Division. They have identical playing records with seven wins and one defeat from eight matches.

“It will be a tough game,” Sports boss Jummy Dean said. “They beat Wisbech 4-0 in the last round which is a bit better than we managed against them, but we have bounced back well after losing at Deeping in the league recently. That defeat has made us realise not to take winning matches for granted.

“The response since then has been impressive though. We were outstanding when beating Newport Pagnell last weekend.”

Sports are currently fighting off interest from higher-level St Neots in ace striker Avelino Vieira. The struggling Southern Premier Division side put seven days notice in for the player after watching him against Pagnell.

United Counties Premier Division Peterborough Northern Star host Blackstones of Division One in an all-local Vase tie at Chestnut Avenue tomorrow. Yaxley host Newmarket, while March Town United will be up against it at Gorleston.

It will be a welcome break from league action for Star who have lost their last three matches without scoring a goal.

Holbeach United could get to within a point of Sports at the top of the Premier Division if they win their tough-looking game at second-placed Pagnell tomorrow.

Spalding United will attempt to retain top spot in Division One South of the Evo Stik Northern Premier Division by becoming the first team to beat Gresley in a league match this season. It’s a 3pm kick off at the Sir Halley Stewart Field.

The Tulips are also unbeaten having won six of their first seven matches, while Gresley were knocked out of the FA Cup at Stamnford AFC on Tuesday (September 20).

The Daniels can now concentrate on improving their league form. They are next-to-bottom of a division they were expected to dominate and travel to fellow strugglers Sheffield FC tomorrow.
