NON-LEAGUE: Big test for Daniels as Darlo play at the Zeeco

Darlington 1883 rose from the ashes of Darlington FC, a club that lost a Division Three play-off final to Peterborough United as recently as May, 2000, in 2012. In line with FA rules against clubs who go bust a team with a new name had to start out on the long road back to the Football League and that’s the stated aim of a club now managed by former Darlington, Sunderland and Fulham player Martin Gray.

And Darlo are bang on course to move a step closer to that ultimate ambition. They won promotion from Division One North last season and currently sit second in the Premier Division, seven points behind Blyth Spartans, but with four matches in hand. Moneybags club Salford are third, but also having played four more matches than Darlington 1883.

The Daniels have been in decent recent form, although a three-game winning streak came to an end at 10-man Buxton on Saturday (March 12). That 3-1 defeat left Stamford just a point clear of the relegation zone so defeat tonight could send them back into the bottom four.

In the United Counties Premier Division, Wisbech will expect to extend their unbeaten run to nine matches with a win over Harrowby at Fenland Park, while Yaxley travel to Northampton Spencer for a mid-table battle. Fifth-placed Holbeach United travel to relegated Huntingdon tomorrow (March 16).

Peterborough Northern Star have won just one of their last 13 top-flight matches and they face a tough Hinchingbrooke Cup quarter-final at Chestnut Avenue against higher level Stotfold this evening. A semi-final trip to Deeping Rangers awaits the winners.

There’s a Peterborough Premier Division match in the city tomorrow when Netherton United host ICA Sports at the Grange.
