MATCH PREVIEW: New striker to get a chance against Norwich

Posh manager Grant McCann admits Morgan Ferrier has a reputation ‘for throwing his toys out of the pram’, but he will give the 21 year-old some game time in tomorrow’s pre-season friendly against Championship side Norwich City at the ABAX Stadium (July 16, 3pm).

Ferrier has tried his luck at Arsenal, West Brom, Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest in recent seasons, but has failed to win a contract with any of them. He was at Arsenal from the age of seven-to-17, but played for Bishop’s Stortford last season.

Ferrier admits his attitude ‘wasn’t the best’ in his younger days, but McCann, who handed Paul Taylor, a forward who is no stranger to controversy, a one-year contract earlier this week, is happy to give the strapping striker a chance.

Posh plans for the League One season have already been disrupted by a broken leg for forward Lee Angol which will keep him out for several months.

“Morgan played against us for Boreham Wood this week,” McCann revealed. “And he did well. He caused us some problems so we invited him in for training.

“He does have a reputation for throwing his toys out of the pram at other clubs, but he’s looked sharp and fresh while training with us and he seems like a nice lad. I now need to see him in games before I make a decision on him.

“It’s important we fill the void left by Lee Angol’s injury.”

Posh will tackle Norwich in a two-hour match split into four 30-minute periods. The Posh players will receive a maximum of an hour on the pitch.

It’s the first home game of the summer for Posh and a first chance for home fans to see 16 year-old’s Lewis Freestone and Cameron Gow.

Norwich are expected to field former Posh favourites Ryan Bennett and Russell Martin.

McCann added: “It’s going to be a tough test for us against quality opposition. It was Norwich’s idea to play for two hours, but I think it’s an excellent idea as we try and step up our fitness levels.

“We’ve worked more on our finishing this week, but our attacking play will improve as the lads get used to each other.”

New midfielder Gwion Edwards, Jermaine Anderson and Michael Smith are alle xpected to make their first appearances of the summer.

Teenage striker Matty Stevens is at a family wedding and should make his debut in a youth team friendly at Bedford on Monday (July 18).
