Forrester is expected to return to the starting line-up for the League One match at Bradford City tomorrow (March 4). He’s missed recent matches because of suspension and a loss of form that has been put down to personal problems.

But McCann is confident Forrester is ready to show his best form as Posh set out in pursuit of at least seven wins from their last 11 matches, a run of form the manager believes could secure a top-six finish.

“Chris Forrester is one of the best, if not the best, midfielder in League One,” McCann stated. “And we need him to show that form for the rest of the season.

“As a club we’ve done all we can to help him through his personal problems and the signs were there at Millwall on Tuesday (February 28) he was coming back to his best.

“He had more touches in 20 minutes than the other midfielders had in 70-80 minutes. And when he gets on the ball he makes things happen. Every player has a blip in form, but Chris’s has lasted too long.

“We certainly need him now. Some people might think we have written this season off, but we haven’t and we won’t until it’s impossible to make the play offs. Tomorrow is about keeping ourselves in the hunt.

“Seventy-four points would definitely get us into the play-offs (Posh are currently on 50 points) so eight wins or seven wins and a few draws is what we need.

“We were unlucky not to get at least a point at Millwall, but that game’s gone so all our focus is on winning at Bradford. We have to try and win every game now.

“We’re working hard to find the missing link in our game which is converting more of the chances that we create.”

It’s likely Posh will stick with Tom Nichols as a sole striker tomorrow when McCann is expecting a good footballing match against a team who have a remarkable home record this season of six wins, 12 draws and no defeats.

Bradford haven’t lost at home since March 1, 2016 when beaten by a Colchester side who went on to be relegated from League One.

“Bradford’s home record this season is unusual,” McCann added. “You’d have thought with the big crowds they get it would drive the players on, but they are a very good side who try and play a very attractive style of football.

“Their pitch is heavy, but they still move the ball on it pretty well. We will have to match that.

“We are planning to send Lee Angol out on loan to get his confidence back. His season has not taken off as we had hoped and it’s not just in matches. I see these players in training every day and I pick teams on how sharp they are in training as well as in matches.”

Posh picked up a couple of minor niggles at Millwall, but they shouldn’t have any absentees other than long-term injury victims Jermaine Anderson and Gwion Edwards.

Jack Baldwin is suspended, but Harry Anderson could be in the travelling party.
