Peterborough Northern Star Ladies signed off for 2014 in record-breaking style.
The city side set a new club record on Sunday when smashing bottom club Arnold 11-1 in the East Midlands League Premier Division - a result which also puts them right back into the promotion frame.
The scoreline was Star’s biggest ever league win and the largest margin of victory in the league for seven years.
Even hard-to-please Star boss Steve Iredale was impressed by the performance - particulary the first 30 minutes when Star played some of the best ladies football seen on the 3G surface at The Grange.
Jess Farchica opened the scoring after just three minutes, Sofia ‘Perlo’ Aragosa scored the second after 16 minutes, and new signing Kim Bebbington made it three on the half-hour mark.
Aragosa made it four 10 minutes later and then just before the break Arnold got their only goal from a deflected free-kick.
Straight from the restart Star were back on the attack and left winger Donna Nicholls finished with aplomb after being put through by full back Stef Pepper.
Aragosa, who before Sunday’s game had never scored more than two goals in a season, went on to add two more for an awesome foursome and there were further goals for Bebbington, Samara Iredale, captain Jodie Bartle and substitute Jade Ramm, who was making her comeback after a month out with illness.
Iredale said: “We’ve worked really hard in training on our transition play and movement in the final third of the field and today it was pleasing to see it come off for the ladies. The 3G pitch helped us immensely as we like to play football on the floor.
“Had it not been been for their keeper pulling off at least half a dozen saves it would have been more.”
The massive win gives Star the best goal difference in the league and they go into the second half of the season in third place with games in hand on the teams above them.
