Oakham have won the Peterborough Premier Division title with a game to spare.
And the Rutlanders achieved their ambition in style by beating Deeping Rangers Reserves 6-0 on Saturday (April 25). Lewis Leckie (2), Ben Easson, Edward McDonald, Adam Rothery and Richard Nelson scored the Oakham goals that sealed the title and possible promotion to the United Counties League.
At the other end of the table Leverington boosted their chances of avoiding relegation with a 3-1 win over Sawtry. Top scorer Mariusz Kudyba, Drew Barker and Daniel Paynter claimed the goals although Paynter was later sent off.
Leverington are now off the bottom (Holbeach Reserves have replaced them) and within two points of Crowland with three matches in hand.
Stilton United, genuine title contenders a month ago, have now lost four matches in a row and slipped to fifth in the table. Stilton went down 4-3 to Pinchbeck on Saturday despite goals from Herbie Panting, Richard Baines and Jason Cook.
There was a thrilling finale to the PFA Challenge Cup Final at Chestnut Avenue as Baston pipped Moulton Harrox 7-6 on penalties after a 1-1 draw between Peterborough League Division One rivals.
And the penalty shoot out threw up a couple of cracking lines. Substitute Greg Rawlinson, the club’s all-time leading goal-scorer, netted the winning penalty, while the Baston goalkeeper Liam Davies retired after the game after 10 years service (the club has only existed for those 10 years) and 177 appearances.
An experienced Moulton side had edged the first-half and deservedly took the lead through Benjamin Allen and it took a fine save from a one-on-one situation by Davies to keep Baston in touch.
Baston slowly started to get on top and equalised when Daniel Pick got the last touch after Dan Flood had flicked on a Troy Waters corner.
Waters missed a late chance to win the game, but Baston, who also won their semi-final on penalties, had their hands on the cup a few minutes later.
Oakham United 6 (Leckie 2, Rothery, Easson, McDonald, Nelson, Deeping Rangers Res 0.
Pinchbeck United 4 (Eyett, Gardner, Jenkins, Abell), Stilton United 3 (Baines, Cook, Panting).
Leverington 3 (Barker, Kudyba, Paynter), Sawtry 1.
