Peterborough Northern Star Ladies returned to the top of the East Midlands Premier League last night (March 18) after a 4-0 win away at Sandiacre Town.
Due to fixture cancellations it was Star’s first game in nearly three weeks and playing on a very bumpy pitch there were expected to be signs of rustiness from some of the players.
However, after just five minutes Vicky Gallagher pounced on a through-ball and calmly slotted past the keeper to give Star an early lead and settle any nerves.
With the home team quite happy to concede possession and defend in numbers, it was down to Star to try and force the issue and on more than one occasion it was the pitch that came to the home team’s rescue as balls took awkward bounces off the surface.
Gallagher made it 2-0 after 25 minutes with a shot from outside the box that looked to be heading wide but a touch from a defender deflected it past the keeper
The second half continued in a similar vein with Star dominating the midfield areas and looking to create chances to increase their goal difference.
Chanade Henderson made it 3-0 when she shot from the edge of the six-yard box and the keeper spilled the ball into the net while trying to make the save.
With the game now safe Star were given the chance to utilise all their subs with a view to future games and the changes didn’t affect the dominance that they enjoyed although keeper Sarah Hudson standing in for Aiofe Bromley was called on to make two point blank saves in order to keep out the home team.
After 70 minutes Gallagher made the game safe converting a penalty after Jodie Bartle was sent flying in the box by a rash tackle from the Sandiacre full-back.
Afterwards Star boss Steve Iredale praised his ladies for the display.
He said: “We were comfortable without being exceptional but with every game now being like a cup final then a win is all that counts. If you don’t concede then you don’t lose and we’ve conceded just two goals in seven games despite having to juggle the back four around.”
Star take a break from league action this Sunday to play in the Northants County Cup Final against Burton Park Ladies. The final is being held at Raunds Town FC with a 3pm kick-off.
