The Peterborough League rep XI were beaten in a seven-goal thriller in the FA Inter-League Cup at Chestnut Avenue yesterday (September 19).
It was always likely to be a tough ask against a Dorset Premier League side who reached the semi-finals of the competition the last time it was staged, but the city lads battled gamely before succumbing 4-3.
So the chance of history disappearaed for Darren Fogg’s side who were attempting to win two rounds of the national competition for the first time.
Gary Gibbs did fire the city side in front early in the game and the Peterborough Sports striker equalised midway through the half after Dorset had struck twice in quick succession. Gibbs’ second arrived after good work down the left wing by Tom Flatters, one of five Netherton United players to start the game.
The visitors deservedly edged back in front before the break, but Matt Heron turned in a cross at the far post to make it 3-3.
But it was Dorset who found the winning goal, although there was a hint of offside. It was harsh on the home side who were much stronger after the break.
