There was no better way for Doug Nash to celebrate his 80th birthday than by smashing in six goals at the Netherton Walking Football Christmas Festival at The Grange.
Thirty players joined in to form a six-team round-robin competition which was played just for fun with no winners’ medals or trophies handed out.
Afterwards everyone assembled in the Netherton United clubhouse to enjoy some seasonal sausage rolls and mince pies.
Doug was presented with a cake and football top to mark his birthday.
In thanking everyone for their good wishes Doug remarked how much he looked forward to his weekly game of walking football and how it had introduced him to a host of new friends.
It was in 1958 that Doug last played competitive football when he turned out regularly for British Rail before going on to help run the GPO team.
He is the oldest registered walking footballer in Northamptonshire.
The Netherton group has more than 50 registered players and anybody wishing to join in the fun can get further details are available from firstname.lastname@example.org
