Peterborough Sports’ promotion prospects have been dealt a big blow with the loss of star player Dan Clements to AFC Stamford.

Clements, Sports top scorer in United Counties Division One with 16 goals, has made a three-division jump and is expected to feature for ‘The Daniels’ in their Northern Premier Division match at Belper this Saturday.

Sports have reacted by signing Ashley Stevens, a former Posh youth team player with an excellent scoring record in the UCL.

“It’s a blow to lose one of my best players,” Sports’ boss Chris Plummer admitted. “But it’s a big jump in standard for Dan and I hope he succeeds there.

“We have boosted our strike force though with the arrival of Ashley. He hasn’t played much this season so we have to get him up to match fitness, but he has an outstanding scoring record in the Premier Division so he should be a good signing for us.”

Sports are second in Division One, but have two tough games in succession against fellow promotion contenders Raunds (away, January 31) and Lutterworth (home, February 7). Stevens is expected to be in the squad at Raunds.

Stamford are struggling in the league, but they did gain a first competitive win at their new Zeeco Stadium by beating local rivals Spalding in the Lincs Senior Trophy this week. Lewis Carr scored the only goal of the game.

March Town produced the result of the week by despatching higher level Histon from the Cambs Invitation Cup. Danny Woods (3) and Denny Escorio (2) scored the goals in a 5-3 win.
