The 23-year-old returned to haunt Posh on Saturday (April 9) by scoring in Rochdale’s 2-1 League One victory at the ABAX Stadium and was delighted to find the net against his former employers.

Mendez-Laing said: “It’s always good to score against a former club and it was really pleasing to get the three points.

“We started really well and should have been further in front at half-time.

“It was a mixed reception for me on my return which is what I expected. I still have a lot of friends here so coming back didn’t faze me.”

“I heard a few boos from behind the goal so I couldn’t resist shushing them.

“It was an up and down time for me at Posh but everything happens for a reason and I am just glad to be playing at Rochdale.

“Posh changed their formation when they fell behind which made it harder but we stuck to our task and defended well. We are taking it game by game and I still believe we can get into the play-offs if we keep winning.”

Mendez-Laing arrived at Posh on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2010 and went on to score five goals in 33 appearances during the club’s promotion-winning campaign.

The Birmingham born-winger signed for Posh permanently in 2012 and scored four goals in 51 appearances during a turbulent five-year stint at the ABAX Stadium.

He also had loan spells at Shrewsbury, Portsmouth and Cambridge before signing for Rochdale last summer.
