But the club’s new vice-captain has been warned he will have to fight for his starting place following the arrival of right-back Hayden White last month.

Posh manager Grant McCann said: “It is good to get Michael committed for the long-term. He has a house in the area and didn’t want to move anywhere else.

“Hayden White has started the first few days of pre-season really well. He is lightning quick and will be giving Michael some serious competition for that right-back berth.

“That is what I wanted. Michael hasn’t had that competition before and I think he is really relishing that competition. I’m sure he will be knocking on the Northern Ireland door again.”

Posh also secured goalkeeper Ben Alnwick on a three-year deal earlier this week.
