The 29 year-old signed a new three-year Posh contract during the current pre-season trip to Portugal and immediately set his sights on a League One promotion push.

“I’m delighted to get the new contract sorted,” Alnwick said. “I love it here. I’m very settled and I’m getting on great with Mark Tyler (goalkeeper coach).

“The team have unfinished business as far as I’m concerned.

“We let ourselves down last season with the way we played in the last couple of months and we want to put things right now.

“I’m raring to go. I was working hard before we returned for official pre-season training.

“I was putting myself through double sessions and I reckon I will be as fit as I’ve ever been when the League One season starts.

“It’s been hard work in Portugal this week, but the squad looks strong and fit.”

Northern Ireland international right-back Michael Smith has also extended his contract at Posh.

Smith is the club’s new vice-captain.
