The 25 year-old arrived at Posh in the summer from QPR with a decent goalscoring record from his days at League One level on loan at Swindon Town.

He scored for the Robins in two separate games at the ABAX Stadium, but it’s taken him25 appearances to claim his first Posh goal, the crucial first goal in Tuesday’s 5-2 FA Cup win over Woking.

“It is pleasing to get that monkey off my back of not scoring. The goal gave me a boost and I enjoyed the game.

“ I felt free in a role a bit further forward. I enjoyed myself and I hope to contribute a few more goals in the coming weeks.

“It’s great to be in the third round and it’s a good tie at Aston Villa, but our focus now is entirely on Fleetwood this weekend. We showed good character to come from behind against Woking and we need to carry that into the league matches.”

Like the rest of the Posh squad, Doughty is in awe of Jack Marriott’s scoring exploits. Marriott scored twice against Woking to take his tally in all competitions to 17 goals.

He is the leading scorer in the top four divisions of English football, when only League and FA Cup goals are included, with 16, one more than Christian Doidge of League Two side Forest Green and two more than Leon Clarke of Championship club Sheffield United.

Doughty added: “Jack is a real handful. He can score goals at any level, I have no doubt about that. He has 17 goals now and he could have scored even more against Woking.”

Posh are in the market for a goalscoring midfielder and a strike partner for Marriott in January.
