High praise from Peterborough United's Evans as Matt finishes as well as Marriott, in fact only Gayle has been quicker than Godden

Marriott bagged 33 goals in a brilliant campaign for Posh last season. Godden has 11 already this term after his brace against former club Scunthorpe delivered a 2-0 win for Posh at Glanford Park last weekend.

Posh remain second in the League One table ahead of home matches against Accrington Stanley(October 20) and Fleetwood (October 23).

And Godden has been a major factor in that success. He is currently scoring at a qucker rate than Marriott managed.

“Comparisons between Jack and Matt are inevitable and understandable,” Evans admitted. “And if Matt is still ahead of Jack’s scoring rate when he’s having his Christmas dinner he will be a very happy man.

“I have to admit I watch games sometimes and wonder what Matt is giving us, but then he comes alive in the penalty area and scores a goal.

“And Jack was exactly the same. He would be quiet, but then he would score and win us a game.

“I’m not saying one is better than the other. Both are top strikers and I’m delighted Matt joined us in the summer.

“He turned us down at first, but thankfully we managed to change his mind and it’s worked out well for both parties.”

Godden’s start to his Posh career is almost as good as every other recent top striker at the club as far as goals scored are concerned.

He reached 10 goals for the season in his 16th appearance last Saturday (and promptly went on to score an 11th).

Jack Marriott also reached his 10th goal in his 16th match, while club stars of the recent past, Craig Mackail-Smith (23 games), Aaron Mclean (21) and Britt Assombalonga (21) took longer.

Only Dwight Gayle reached 10 goals quicker, He reached double figures by scoring a ‘perfect’ hat-trick in a 3-2 win at Blackburn Rovers in his 15th Posh appearance.

And that was a superb achievement as Gayle played exclusively in the Championship for Posh.
