Former Peterborough United favourite released by Norwich

The defender won three promotions with the Canaries but is now free to find another club.

He signed a new contract until 2019, with the option of a further year, just weeks after boss Daniel Farke took over last summer but played just seven times for the German and has been allowed to leave.

The Scotland international’s last appearance for the club came in a 4-0 defeat at Millwall a year ago and he spent the second half of last season on loan at Rangers, making 17 appearances and scoring once.

On his return to Norfolk the 32-year-old spent the summer training with the club’s under-23 squad.

He has not been a part of the matchday squad this season with the inconsistent Canaries sitting 18th in the Sky Bet Championship, ahead of Sunday’s derby at Ipswich.

Martin initially joined Norwich on loan from Peterborough in November 2009 before making the move permanent two months later.

He helped the Canaries to successive promotions to the Premier League, winning Sky Bet League One in 2010 and coming second in the Sky Bet Championship a year later.

He also led the club back to the top flight in 2015 after a 2-0 win over Middlesbrough in the Sky Bet Championship play-off final at Wembley following relegation the previous year.

The loan window closes for EFL clubs today but Martin, as a free agent, can move outside the window.

He played 309 times for the Canaries, scoring 17 goals, and is 22nd on Norwich’s all-time appearance list.

Martin joined Posh from Wycombe Wanderers in 2008 and made 56 appearances for the club.
