Big game against title fancies for Peterborough Sports after their Hitchin horror show

Peterborough Sports must react to their Hitchin horror show last night (January 21) and make life tough for Southern League Premier Division Central title favourites Tamworth at the Bee Arena this Saturday (January 25, 3pm).

Sports followed a mightily-impressive 2-0 win at play-off rivals Banbury last Saturday with a shock 4-0 home reverse at the hands of a struggling Hitchin side last night, even though former Premier League star Tresor Lomana LuaLua made a 30-minute debut for the city side as a second-half substitute.

The standard of the performance prompted an apology on social media from Sports boss Jimmy Dean whose side would have gone second, and overtaken Tamworth, with a win.

“It was painful to watch,” Dean remarked after reviewing the Hitchin match on video the following morning.

“I don’t know where that level of performance came from. I know why we lost lost though. They outworked us and they wanted it more than us and we got what we deserved as a result.

“We’ve had problems with teams who play long and who make the game ugly. We lost at Barwell recently who played like that.

“But now we need a response. Tamworth are the last team we need to be playing after such a poor performance, but we also need to show them that we are a good side because we also played poorly at their place earlier this season.

“We lost 3-1 and it could have been 10-1. We might play well and still not beat them as they are that good. For me Royston and Tamworth are the joint favourites for the title, but we beat current leaders Bromsgrove at home so we can beat Tamworth. I need to see a reaction at the very least and I’m sure I will get one.

“We were good at Banbury which made the Hitchin performance even more surprising. We have had a problem with playing Tuesday and Saturday though.”

Sports remain third.
