The championships are open to all fencers aged 40 and over and after winning it last year, Howser started as the number one seed.

He had a tough last 16 fight against seven-times winner Neal Mallett before edging through 8-7, then he proceeded comfortably to the final.

There he met former world pentathlon champion Richard Phelps and after an epic battle had to concede victory at 10-9 and settle for silver this time round.
