'˜Electricity cut' really was a hot spot

I was given some very old angling magazines to look through recently and came across a piece of water that was renowned throughout the country as the venue to fish through the winter months right here in the city centre.

But are you old enough to remember it or perhaps fished it in the 1960s?

It’s the old ‘electricity cut’ which held warm water from the old electricity power station that is no longer with us.

It’s all overgrown these days, but the good news is that plans are afoot to clean it out so that we can once again enjoy the fishing it has to offer - but minus the hot water!

Wansford was the venue for the latest round in the Yaxley, Farcet, Holme and District AC points series.

Lionel Whaley was drawn on the end peg downstream and won with an 8lb 13oz catch of roach, skimmers and bleak, caught on maggot. Whaley fished over groundbait at 11m and caught a small fish almost every put-in.

Runner-up Steve Cox was two pegs above the winner and fished caster on a stick float for 6lb 5oz while Mike Mohan managed third place with 5lb 7oz, also fishing caster and stick float down the middle of the river.
