Deeping darts ace Martin ‘Wolfie’ Adams suffered a shock defeat in the opening round of the BDO World Championships at the Lakeside Country Club today (January 5),
Adams, the second seed, was thrashed 3-0 by Canadian number one Jeff Smith, losing the final four legs of the match.
Adams, playing in his 23rd World Championship at the age of 59, started well and was averaging over 100 per three darts in the first set, but lost it 3-1. He missed seven darts at doubles in the opening two legs of the match.
Adams hit his first 180 in the first leg of the second set and eventually claimed the leg in just 10 darts, but he lost his throw in the fifth and final leg to lose the set 3-2.
And Smith powered through the third set, finishing in style with a 120 check-out as Adams waited for a shot at double top.
Smith was a dangerous first round opponent for Adams. He was a beaten semi-finallist last year and had already beaten Dutchman Matthew Medhurst 3-0 in a preliminary round game.
“He played better than I did, it’s as simple as that,” Adams admitted. “I couldn’t hit my doubles early doors and that proved crucial. I had the chances to win the first set and if I had I would have had a chance.
“But Jeff played brilliantly. If he keeps that standard up he could win the tournament.”
Dennis Harbour now carries local hopes in the World Championships. He is due to play Welsh numnber 10 seed Martin Phillips in a second round match. If Harbour wins that he could play Smith in a quarter-final.
