Peterborough Cycling Club’s Gareth Smith gained his best ever road race placing of fifth in the Northants CRA handicap road race at Middleton near Corby.

His Qualitetch/Alston Country Homes sponsored road racing team-mate James Boardley rode comfortably to finish in the main bunch.

Steve Wood and Matt Garfield also finished in the main bunch in the Essex Roads Spring road race on Sunday.

Smith also tackled the event but his race was curtailed by a nail puncturing his rear wheel.

Graham Wright contested the East Midlands VTTA 25 and finished in a personal best of 1 hour and 33 seconds.

The third race in the Thursday Summer League at Helpston was won by James Gelsthorpe in 23:33 with Paul Pardoe just one second behind. Dave Sargent was third in 23:45.

For Pardoe this was an impressive one minute and 32-second improvement and puts him top of the club’s ranking table.

The club’s resident professional Steve Lampier from Bourne rode the 180km UCI registered Melton Cicli Classic from Oakham to Melton Mowbray on Sunday.

In a top-class international field, Lampier finished in 40th place but was only 20 seconds off the winner, Steele Van Hoff of Australia.

He was going very well but punctured at a vital time.
