James Gelsthorpe was the surprise winner of the latest race in the Peterboroug Cycling Club Summer League series at Helpston.

Fourteen riders faced John Savill the timekeeper and on an unusually calm evening Gelsthorpe clocked 22:08 to beat Raleigh GAC professional Steve Lampier by eight seconds.

Jason Burrill continued his good run of form by finishing third in 22:21.

Annette Wyld was the leading lady in 30: 31.

Gelsthorpe, Burrill, Dave Sargent (22:43), Andy Cartledge (23:22) and Graham Wright (24:26) all returned personal bests for the Helpston circuit.

On Sunday August 23 Peterborough Cycling Club will once again be promoting their highly successful road races around a circuit starting at Glatton.

The top race distance is 124km, and the supporting race (run concurrently) is 74 km.

The main race is for Elite/1st/2nd category riders and has attracted a good quality and full field including five riders from the iconic Team Wiggins (sadly not Sir Bradley).

The races are generously sponsored by Alston Country Homes and full details can be found on the club website
