Oundle Town are the indisputable cup kings of local cricket.

Oundle beat Stamford Town by 92 runs in the 25th anniversary final of the Rutland League’s John Wilcox Trophy yesterday (September 6). They had already won the Rutland League’s Twenty/20 Cup - for the second successive season - and, most impressively, the Northants Twenty/20 Cup.

The John Wilcox Final was postponed last week (August 31) and then moved from a neutral venue to Oundle’s Milton Road ground and the hosts made home advantage count once overcoming a stodgy start to their 50-over innings.

At halfway Oundle were labouring at 53-3, but they added 166 from the final 25 overs to post a respectable 219-7 on what is usually a quick-scoring ground. Man-of-the-match Alex Martin top scored with 57 before Marc Bell (38), captain Bashrat Hussain (35no), Callum Greaves (24) and Jonathan Dalley (24) provided the late-innings hurry-up.

Veteran Chris Birch conceded just 15 runs from his 10 overs, while Richard Field and Ben Peck collected two wickets apiece for Stamford.

But Stamford’s top order batting promptly collapsed and they did well to reach 127 from 35-5 and 58-6. Alex Birch top scored with 30 and Simon Prentice contributed 25.

Hussain, Petrus Jeftha, Joe Charlton and Jack Bolsover all took two wickets for Oundle.

It was a fourth Trophy win in eight years for Oundle. Stamford have never won the competition.
