Cambridgeshire captain Paul McMahon followed his bowling spell of 8-96 with an innings of 70, but he still couldn’t save his side from defeat against Lincolnshire in the Minor Counties Championship at Grantham today (July 21).
McMahon put on exactly 100 with Ketton’s Ben Bryant (47) for the sixth wicket, but Cambs were eventually dismissed for 217 in their second innings to complete a 113-run defeat. They had been set an unlikely victory target of 331.
McMahon, a Peterborough Town professional, delivered 34 overs yesterday on his way to a second eight-wicket haul at this level, but received little help from his fellow bowlers. Joe Barrs and Wisbech Town’s Sam Rippington were the only other wicket-takers before Lincs were dismissed for 288 in their second innings.
Bourne pair Carl Wilson and Conrad Louth scored 45 & 15 respectively in Lincs’ second innings.
Notts first-class player Matthew Carter played a big part in the first innings. He bagged seven wickets with his off-spin in the Cambs’ first innings of 152.
Carter, who plays club cricket for Lincs Premier Division title chasers Bracebridge Heath, created first-class headlines earlier this summer when taking 7-56 on his County Championship debut at Somerset. They were the best debutant figures by a Notts player for over 100 years.
Opener Ben Howgego top scored for Cambs with 40 in the first innings while Peterborough Town’s Butt made 24 in both innings. James Williams of Wisbech and Dan Robinson both failed to contribute with the bat.
Cambs have now lost three of their four Eastern Division matches. They are next in action away to Norfolk starting at Manor Park, Horsford starting on Sunday, August 2.
