Peterborough Town captain Lewis Bruce is finishing the season in style.
Fresh from a career-best 124 in last week’s (August 22) victory over Horton House, Bruce bagged 3-26 and cracked an unbeaten 57 as Town beat Rushton by six wickets in the Northants Premier Division at Bretton Gate today (August 29).
It was revenge of sorts for Town who were were knocked out the Northants (and therefore the national) Twenty/20 Cup by Rushton, but it was a mere consolation as leaders Rushden also won to edge closer to the title.
Town are in cricketing no-man’s land. They are 35 points behind the leaders with just three matches remaining, but way clear of the rest of the division. This one-sided game confirmed that the city side’s standards may have dropped a little this summer, but they still have far too much quality for most.
Rushton started this game well. They won the toss and sauntered to 94-2, but once star men Andrew Reynoldson and Dan Bendon had both been dismissed for 34 there was very little Rushton resistance.
England Under 17 international David Sayer dismissed Bendon as his recovery from a serious back injury gathered pace, but off-spinners Bruce and Paul McMahon rattled through the middle order. McMahon claimed 3-34 from 17 miserly overs
Paceman Joe Dawborn claimed both visiting openers and returned to take a third victim late on to finish with 3-30.
Town have found batting tricky at times on their own track this season, but they strolled home here in just 31 overs,
Bruce lacked the fluency of the previous weekend, but batted throughout the innings, receiving solid support from Asim Butt (23), Tim Young (20no), Marcus Howard (19) and David Clarke (18).
