Cambs are a win away from finals day in the first staging of the Minor Counties Twenty/20 competition.
Cambs edged through their group at Sawston yesterday (May 31) to set up a play-off game against Beds at Cople on June 28. The winners of that tie will contest Finals Day.
Cambs beat Norfolk by six wickets off the final ball of a 13-over match before seeing off Suffolk by two wickets in a low-scoring contest.
Captain, and Peterborough Town professional, Paul McMahon claimed 3-8, including two wickets in two balls, as Suffolk were dismissed for just 85. Wisbech seamer Sam Rippington (3-17) also impressed while Peterborough Town’s Joe Dawborn and Ramsey’s Michael Cafferkey each claimed two wickets.
It was also a struggle with the bat for Cambs, but Craig Park’s 22 proved crucial as did runs right down the order from Joe Barrs.
Cafferkey (3-24 & 21) enjoyed an excellent all-round game against Norfolk, while Park (25) also scored well, but it was left to Peterborough Town skipper Lewis Bruce to face the final ball with one run still required to win. Bruce promptly smacked it for six!
Suffolk had beaten Lincs by nine runs in their 10-over semi-final. Bourne batsmen Conrad Louth and Carl Wilson were in the Lincs side and made 11 and 15 respectively.
Cambs open their three-day Minor Counties Championship programme with an Eastern Division tie against West Bromwich Dartmouth on Sunday (June 7).
