Brilliant Bourne openers blast Spalding to relegation

There was carnage at the Abbey Lawns yesterday as Spalding’s relegation from the Lincs Premier Division was confirmed by a brutal batting assault from Bourne openers Peter Morgan and Conrad Louth.

Spalding must have felt they had an outside chance of a rare win when posting an all-out total of 177, but they were sadly mistaken.

Captain Morgan and Lincs Minor Counties regular Louth went about their task with such gusto they needed just 12 overs to clinch victory, scoring at a barely credible rate of just under 15 an over.

Morgan reached 100 from just 39 balls and was unbeaten on 101 when the win was confirmed, making Louth’s unbeaten 66 from 38 balls appear almost Boycott-like.

Morgan smashed five sixes and 16 fours, while Louth hammered just one six, but 13 fours.

Naturally the Spalding figures were a mess with James Hook conceding 53 runs from just three overs, Roy Tilley going for 30 from two overs and Patrick harrington conceding 38 runs from just 11 balls. Charlie Kearns’ spell of five overs for 53 was respectable in the circumstances.

Bourne’s win kept them third in the table, but Market Deeping’s once-promising campaign is fizzling out in disappointing fashion.

They went down by 93 runs at home to Outgang Road, victims of a superb century from visiting professional Amila Wettasinghe (134 from 984 balls) and some poor batting of their own.

Only Alex Wheatley (60) stood firm for any length of time as Deeping were disnissed for 173 in reply to Louth’s 266. An early burst from Tom Andrews (4-32) had helped reduce Louth to 88-5.
