CRICKET: Classy Charlotte steers England into the semi-finals

Captain Charlotte Edwards produced a clasy knock to steer England into the semi-finals of the Women's World Twenty/20 Cup yesterday (March 27).

Edwards, who started her careeer at Ramsey Cricket Club, batted throughout England’s innings of 148-5 for an unbeaten 77 in their final group match against Pakistan.

England maintained their 100 per cent winning record with a 68-run to win to set-up a semi-final showdown with Australia in Delhi on Wednesday (March 30). That match will preceed England man’s semi-final with New Zealand at the same venue.

Edwards said: “The men were superb when booking their place in the semi-final with their win against Si Lanka and we were determined to follow them to Delhi.

“It was important we put on a really good performance, knowing we had to win the game, and it was our best performance of the World Cup so far. We were pretty clinical with bat and ball.

“To have two England semi-finals in Delhi on Wednesday will be fantastic, hopefully we can get two wins.”

England’s performances had been scratchy until yesterday. They had beatan Blangladesh by 36 runs, India by two wickets and West Indies by one wicket in their previous group matches when runs have been hard to come by.

Edwards has been in decent nick though. She registered scores of 30, 4 and 60 ahead of yesterday’s game. New Zealand play West Indies in the second semi-final on Thursday (March 31) with the final scheduled for Sunday April 3, in Kolkata.
