Baker brings home the Danish bacon

Hot prospect Alfie Baker got the Peterborough Police Amateur Boxing Club season off to a fantastic start in Denmark at the weekend.

The 11 year-old son of head coach Chris Baker fought in the Haslev Box Cup, an international tournament, and boxed the pants off a Danish opponent who was two years older.

Baker dominated all three rounds with his aggressive long power shots to win unanimously on points.

The Peterborough Police club also had three fighters in action at the Eastern Counties Novice Championship finals in Colchester.

Connor Dane (15) from Newborough was first up in the Under 54kg final against tough opponent Tommy Petchell from the Trumpington ABC in Cambridge.

And after an even first round, Dane came on strong in the last two rounds producing some great work inside and delivering some quality straight punches to secure a cracking points win and become an Eastern Counties champion.

Brian Lawless (19) from Peterborough boxed Terry Martin from the Canvey ABC in an Under 75kg semi-final and outclassed his opponent in all three rounds to secure a place in the final tomorrow in Chelmsford along with clubmate Kamil Tarnawski who received a bye through to the Under 81kg final.

City-based Jaansher Raja (16) was also in action. He boxed local lad and friend Junaid Ali from the Top Yard club in Peterborough and lost on points to a busier opponent.

n The Peterborough Police club are putting on a show at the Queen Katherine Academy in Mountsteven Avenue, Peterborough, on Saturday night (October 6) sponsored by The Solstice.

Admission is £10 on the door and £5 for under 16 year-olds. Doors open at 7pm with boxing scheduled to start at 7.30pm.
