CITY boxer JJ Bird could clinch a title shot tonight. The 22 year-old welterweight from the Gary De Roux stable fights highly rated Nathan Graham from Aylesbury at Kensington Town Hall and, according to De Roux, a win would almost certainly earn Birdan area title chance.

"It's not an official eliminator but if JJ does well I'll put his name forward for the Southern Area welterweight tile and I see no reason why it shouldn't happen for him," said De Roux.

"JJ has boxed all the best kids around his weight category and has always given a good account of himself. He's come of age now, he's off the leash and a Southern Area title is his next step."

Graham has won seven of his eight pro bouts, four inside the distance, whereas Bird has a record of five wins and a draw from 10 contests.

But De Roux feels Bird's opponents have all been higher quality fighters.

"JJ has looked superb in the gym and I honestly believe he will eat Graham alive. He will stop him," added De Roux.

FORMER Arena Amateur Boxing Club star Arron Prout had a good win in the Combined Services Championships in Portsmouth recently.

The 17 year-old from Werrington, a Royal Marine commando, represented the Navy in the Championships at the HMS Nelson Gymnasium and he won the light-welterweight B final by outpointing C. Pickard from the Army 7-2 on the computer scoring system.

Prout, son of Arena ABC trainer Phil, turned in a very mature performance, took his time and picked his shots for a comfortable victory.
