Nicky Brett’s bid to become world indoor singles champion got off to a promising start yesterday (January 14).
The number four seed from Yaxley moved into the second round of the Just Retirement World Indoor Bowls singles championship at the Potters Leisure Resort with a straight sets win over Andy McLean.
Despite dropping a single on the opening end of the first set, the City of Ely Bowls Club star then reeled off 11 straight shots over the next five ends to seal the set.
In the second set McLean once again got off to a good start, scoring three successive singles to lead 3-2 after four ends.
However Brett turned the score around with back to back trebles only for McLean to reply with full house to trail 8-7 playing the last before a further count of three saw Brett safely over the finishing line 12-5, 11-7.
