Local bowler Nicky Brett’s hopes of a first world indoor singles title were dashed in today’s (January 23) quarter-finals at Potters Leisure.

The world number three was beaten 2-1 in a tie-break after a titanic battle with record five-time winner Alex Marshall, the Scot winning 11-4, 4-14, 2-1.

Marshall was imperious in the opening set, but all credit to Brett who stepped up a gear in the second to constantly put the Commonwealth Games double gold medal winner under pressure and force the match into a tie-break.

Brett took the opening end of the tie-break, Marshall levelled in the second and then forced the jack off the rink for a re-spot after Brett had put his opening bowl almost on the jack in the decisive end before drawing the match winner with his third delivery.
