Young Harriers show early promise

There were some promising performances by youngsters from Nene Valley Harriers at the Bedfordshire AA Open meeting at Sandy on Saturday - one of the first track and field meetings of the season.

Despite very windy conditions, the middle distance runners in particular ran some excellent times.

Megan Ellison ran a personal best (PB) of 2.18 .6 in the Under 17 800m, which was very close to the qualifying time for the English Schools Championships, and her brother Ethan knocked over two seconds off his PB in the Under 15 800m as well.

Amber Park smashed her PB in the Under 15 800m by three and a half seconds to record a time of 2.29.3 and then went on to win her first ever 300m race.

Star pole vaulter Holly Brown (Under 17), who has recently joined Nene Valley from Peterborough AC, ran the 100m for the first time in over a year and had a great run in difficult conditions. She also recorded a new PB in the discus of 21.02m.

Some youngsters who have just stepped up to the Under 13 age group from Under 11 performed well with Danielle Pusey recording a distance of 10.60m in the javelin.

Ten year-old Cemal Korkmaz ran a good race in his first 1500m event in a time of 5.56.4 and was supported well by Jack Jackson (6.15.6).

Under 20 thrower Isaac Huskisson displayed very good early-season form, setting a new PB in the hammer (51.25m) and the discus (34.01m).

Club stalwart David Bush turned in the best shot putt distance of the day of 10.71m in the shot and threw 40.36m in the javelin.

Other notable performances came from Kelsi Ellis (46.7 in the Under 15 300m) and Alex Pullan (13.5 in the Under 17 100m) and Emma Penniston (5.23.5 in the senior ladies 1500m).


Three members of Peterborough AC took part in the pentathlon at the Lee Valley Open on Sunday.

In the Under 15 age group Ellie Forrest finished in eighth place out of 30 girls gaining personal bests in the shot putt and long jump.

Lewis Davey competed in the Under 15 boys event finishing fourth out of eight boys and also set a PB in the shot.

Molly Fletcher recorded four new PBs in the Under 13 competition.

At the same meeting Georgia Ives-Lappin of Peterborough Athletic Club set new personal bests in the Under 15 60m hurdles (9.97) and the 60m (8.79).
