Although the 37 year-old was unable to ‘reign in Spain’ and missed out on a podium place, he left his mark on the competition by getting through to the Over 35 400m hurdles final.

Reidy breezed through his heat as runner-up with a 56.50 clocking, but missed out on the medals when finishing sixth in the final with a time of 56.37.

“I ran my heart out to be in the mix with 100m to go,” said Reidy. “However, due to injuries during the season I couldn’t cope with the lactic acid, and my legs were gone in the last 50 metres. I can’t believe I was still on my feet after hurdle 10!”

The versatile Reidy also competed in the 800m and qualified for the semi-finals. Despite running a three year best time of 2:01.96 he narrowly failed to get through to the final.

Harriers Andrea Jenkins and Dave Brown are scheduled to compete in the latter stages of the competition.

Jenkins will be hoping to retain her throwing pentathlon crown while 400m specialist Brown will be looking to add another medal to his collection after winning silver in the European Masters Indoor Championship earlier this year.

ON THE ROAD

Phil Martin led the region’s assault on Sunday’s Great North Run, finishing 67th with a time of 1:19.06. This represented something of a ‘jog on the Tyne’ for Martin who was over five minutes down on his fastest effort over the distance.

The Peterborough AC veteran was just 22 seconds and two places ahead of Stamford Strider Mark Popple.
