Two local runners became British champions at the weekend.
Phil Martin of Bushfield Joggers and Nene Valley Harrier Philippa Taylor won age group titles at Sunday’s Wissey Half-Marathon at Oxborough, which incorporated both the British Masters Athletics Federation(BMAF) and the Eastern Veterans Athletics Club’s (EVAC) 2015 Half-Marathon Championships.
Orton-based Martin, who has only been running competitively for a couple of years, knocked a staggering four minutes off his personal best (PB) when finishing fifth overall in 1:14:33 and that earned him both the the BMAF and EVAC Over 35 titles.
Taylor also did the BMAF and EVAC double as her time of 1:21:55, which was the third fastest time by a female, gave her the ladies Over 45 titles.
Sean Beard of Nene Valley was 17th in 1:19:05 and collected the BMAF bronze and EVAC silver medals in the Over 45 category while 48 year-old Yvonne Scarrott finished third lady in her age group category.
EASTERN YOUNG ATHLETES
Nene Valley Harriers finishing fifth in the Eastern Young Athletes’ League play-off final at Bedford on Sunday.
Pride of place in the final, which was contested by the top six of the 28 clubs in the league, went to Nene Valley’s Under 15 girls squad.
They finished second on the day, just half a point behind Havering AC, and there was a hat-trick of wins for Hannah Molyneaux in the throwing events and an impressive sprint double by Jasmine Allen
The Under 17 girls also finished as runners-up with wins coming from Megan Ellison (800m A and 300m B), Casey Hilliam (800m B), Shandon Hodgeson (80m hurdles B), Rosie Fresen (pole vault A), Lydia Church (shot putt A), Priscilla Dadziea (shot putt B and discus B) and Bethany Denial (long jump A).
Other Nene Valley Harriers winners were Williams Hughes in the Under 15 boys 100m and 200m A races, Charles Hughes in the Under 15 boys shot A string and Kai Harrison in the Under 15 boys shot B string.
