Heron swoops for Eye

Ben Heron won the first Frostbite League race of the new season at St Neots on Sunday.

Heron’s victory helped his club Eye Community Runners to finish fourth, one of their highest ever finishes in a Frostbite race. Nene Valley Harriers also had a good day finishing second behind overall winners Hunts AC.

Heron held off Jamie Hall of Hunts AC to win by just one second with a time of 26:56. Werrington’s Paul Halford came in 5th in 28:10 while Yaxley’s Steve Lomax was 10th with a 29:05 clocking.

Nene Valley’s runners-up spot was due in no small part to the form of their ladies. Ruth Jones finished as first lady in a time of 32:53 with teenager Ella Robinson following her home just 21 seconds further back.

Eight out of the top 10 ladies were from local clubs with PACTRAC’s Sarah Caskey fourth in 33:34. Caskey was followed by Eye’s Samantha Cullen who clocked 33:42. Werrington’s Ellie Swire was eight seconds further back.

Nene Valley’s Emma Tomlinson-McCrae was eighth in 34:01 and Kayleigh Draper and Gina Crane helped Yaxley into fifth place overall, finishing ninth and 10th in 34:36 and 34:59 respectively.

Nene Valley also finished second to Hunts AC in the junior race with Sam Staines in second,Sam Garner fifth and Dylan Tomasselli 10th.

Three Nene Valley athletes were among the top 10 girls. Chelsie Bole finished fourth and sisters Evie and Lottie Hemmings came in seventh and eighth.

HARRIER LEAGUE

The Harrier 5k Handicap League got off to a flying start at Lynch Wood with a pair of Nene Valley Harriers first and second across the line.

Sarah Cameron was the winner in a time of 28:39 with Duane Tomasselli second in 19:08. Peterboroigh AC’s Peter Brantom finished third in 26:15.

The fastest time of the night was run by Jordan Foster who clocked 18:34.
