Helpston Harriers up and running

Helpston is best known for the poet John Clare, but this could all change now that an ambitious new running club has taken the name of the thriving village, writes Barry Warne.

After two years existing as a training group only, Helpston Harriers have gone official and are now registered with England Athletics as a legitimate club.

Former Werrington Jogger and Nene Valley distance runnner Micky Moore founded the club and is the captain.

Thomas Musson, also previously of Werrington Joggers, is chairman with triathlon star Paul Lunn the secretary and membership officer.

Many of the better distance runners in the district, including Stamford star Aaron Scott, have signed up, albeit many as second claim members.

Musson said: “We’re still working on our target race plans for next season but the training will be structured around spring marathons, summer track and cross-country.

“We’re not looking to impinge on anyone else’s remit but to grow organically and hopefully contribute to the local running scene. ”
