ATHLETICS: Joy for Jenkins as she strikes gold in Italy

Three Nene Valley Harriers won medals at the European Masters Indoor Championships in Italy.

Leading the way in Ancona with two gold medals and a new British record was Andrea Jenkins.

Competing in the Over 40 age group, she struck gold in the weight throw with a new British Record of 14.72m and then won the hammer with a throw of 48.39m.

Completing a good championships, Jenkins also won a bronze medal in the discus with 40.24m – her best throw for nearly two years.

Julian Smith competed in the Over 45 60m, 200m and 4x200m relay and he capped a good week by taking a bronze medal in the relay.

Earlier in the week he ran a lifetime best of 7.51 secs in the 60m heats to finish second and qualify for the semi-finals. A sixth-place finish in semis meant he missed out on the final.

He had another good run in the 200m heats, finishing second in 24.81 secs, just three hundredths outside his PB, and was then fifth in his semi-final.

David Brown comfortably won his Over 35 400m heat and qualified as one of the fastest losers in the semis. In the final he clocked 50.96 to win a bronze medal, narrowly missing out on silver in a GB 1-2-3 finish.
