City rod John Whincup has been away from the Decoy Lakes match scene for several weeks, testing his skills and indeed winning big matches against the country’s top anglers.

Back on the Beastie Pool he soon got to grips with the venue again though taking top spot in the Saturday Open with 82lb 7oz.

Drawn on peg 18, he caught on the red maggot short all day netting carp and skimmers on a light rig with small hooks.

Richard Bond was second with 78lb 3oz and Barry Mason third on 73lb 1oz.


George Bates also returned to the match fishing scene at the weekend and promptly took top spot at Haddon Fishery with a net of carp and skimmers taken on the pole with soft pellet for 20lb 15oz.

Runner-up was Martin Harwood. He caught on the pole and feeder for 10lb 13oz, then came Jim Ayres with a net of small fish taken on pinkie and maggot weighing a level 8lb.
