A very busy Easter weekend saw several of our local sides taking part in round one of the national Bait Tech/Angling Times Knockout event.

Possibly the best result of the round was the victory for JVAC in their away fixture at Stretton Lakes against Rutlanders Red.

Everyone expected a tight match as the venue is good but it can also be very patchy and unpredictable.

Thankfully the city side had put quite a bit of practice in and it paid off handsomely as they cruised to a comfortable win with five out of six section wins.

It got even better at the scales as JVAC also took the top three individual places.

Dan Abbott topped the field with 55lb 4oz fishing pellet and sweetcorn. Then came team captain Andy Gausden fishing with maggot and pellet for 54lb 11oz and rounding off a great day for the lads Andy Kelk came third on 47lb 10oz.

Several local anglers now fish for a strong Oakham side and they took on Rutlanders Blue on the same day.

They fished at Lakeview but came unstuck losing by four sections to two.

Rutlanders had the first two individuals in Dennis Dalby with 51lb 8oz and Keith Measures on 46lb 1oz.

Top Oakham rod was Peterborough angler Paul Green with 44lb 5oz.

At Pidley at the Rookery Waters fishery, the Johnson Massey A Team beat Hadley APS 4-2 on the Magpie Lake.

The winner from fancied peg two was Hadley angler John Eldred with 83lb 12oz,

Runner-up was Brian Newman with 46lb 6oz followed by Steve Gwynne on 46lb 4oz.

There was a big turnout for the £1,000 qualifier open on the Jay Lake at Rookery Waters.

The lake is running into good form now but is still a little difficult in some areas.

The winner was local rod and venue regular John Price. The Sensas-backed rod drew favoured peg 11 and made no mistake.

He fished right across to the far bank and alternated between maggot and expander pellet over 2mm feed pellets for an all-carp catch of 76lb 12oz and booked his place in the August two-day final.

Josh Pace was second with 61lb 8oz from peg 29, followed by Rob Wright with 56lb 8oz.

Next Saturday’s open will be on Magpie but pegs will be limited so booking is essential. Contact Alex Bates on 07824878492 as soon possible.

To prove a point Sunday’s Ramsey AS club match on the Magpie Pool saw weights rocket with Josh Pace leading the way with a massive 155lb 4oz net of carp taken on the long pole fishing shallow with pellet for 155lb 4oz from peg two.

Andrew Rayment drew peg 23 and he caught with red maggot down the margins for 115lb 8oz and second place.

Third on 114lb was in the in-form John Price followed by Kieran Payne with 89lb 8z.
