North Bank of the Nene is causing some concern

Not only has fishing had to be halted at Ferry Meadows after another outbreak of blue-green algae, but the form of the North Bank of the River Nene is causing some concern ahead of next month’s Division Two National on the venue.

The hot sunny weather has seen many anglers struggling for a bite and a good flush-through and even a tinge of colour would be a blessing that’s for sure.

A lot of hard work has already gone into getting big events back to the area, a poor result in this one could well set the club back for some time.

Sunday’s match there, which was run in conjunction with Sensas Mark One, was fished on the top end of the venue and the pegs close to Fitzwilliam Bridge did produce a few bream and the top two anglers.

Top rod was the experienced Brad Titmus. He had a couple of bream and a few small samples to finish with 10lb 3oz from peg eight.

Just a couple of pegs away was runner-up Steve Winter, who also caught bream weighing in 7lb 9oz.

ROOKERY WATERS

Some of the best stillwater anglers in the area were contesting the two-day Rookery Waters final at the weekend and as expected some huge weights were recorded with city rod Ben Townsend stealing the show.

Day one saw him on peg 47 by the bridge on Jay Lake fishing groundbait and maggots on the long pole line and casters towards the bridge. His far bank line proved to be very productive as he finished with 110lb for third on the lake and the all-important section win.

On day two he drew fancied peg 24 on Magpie Lake and knew 300lb plus would be needed for a section win at least.

He caught well on casters shallow but his main swim produced a much better sample and at the weigh-in he had put a massive 398lb to the scales for second place on the lake and another section win which gave him first place after two days and a massive £1,000 pay-day.

To round the two-day event off in style Townsend drew Josh Pace in the mystery pairs and they scooped the top spot in that too.

COCK INN

Cock Inn were over at one of their favourite venues on Sunday fishing the North View fishery at Gedney Hill.

And despite the awful weather the fishing was quite consistent all round the lake.

Matchwinner for the second time in a row on the venue was Gary Sell. His winning weight was 182lb 13oz from peg two, all caught close in on the pole with corn hookbait, feeding micros pellets.

Second was Mick Sidney with 163lb 8oz and third Chris Shortland with 132lb 4oz.

Shortland is now the clear championship leader in the summer series.

CASTAWAYS

The Castaways club fished the River Trent not far from Winthorpe Bridge on a section called Crankley Point and found it tough going.

Leading the way with a net of small fish caught on the stick float with maggot was Justin Haynes with 5lb 6oz.

Runner-up was Mel Saggers fishing the same tactics for 4lb 8oz, followed by David Norville on 3lb 10oz and Pete Molesworth with 3lb 6oz.
