Over at Rookery Waters the regular Over 60s match was fished on the Magpie Pool, which saw John Belshaw take the top spot with 39lb 14oz from peg 16.

He caught on pellet down the margins and fished the long pole with maggot.

Runner-up was John Millard, who put 34lb 8oz to the scales from peg 10. There was a tie for third place between Kevin Peacock and Roger Abbott, both weighing in 29lb.

In the Saturday £1,000 open qualifier fished on the Magpie Lake, anglers had to contend with extreme winds and bitter cold sweeping across the fens.

Conditions made presentation difficult but the lake fished reasonably well.

The winner was Peterborough rod Martin Freeman. He had not even seen the venue before but I think we will be seeing more of him fishing the matches here.

He opted for a small pellet feeder and double dead red maggot hookbait fished tight to the island from peg 33 with a few late margin fish helping him sneak the win with 63lb.

Maver Image captain Steve Clark drew peg 16 and took the runner-up spot with 59lb 1oz, followed by Paul Goldstraw with 46lb 4oz and Michael Brooker with 44lb 14oz.

This Saturday the £1,000 open qualifier will be fished on the Jay Lake.

If you are looking for a big weight venue then the Cuckoo Canal Pool on the Townsend Lakes complex will be the one to head for.

While most waters suffered in the cold conditions, Dave Rodwell topped the weekend open with a fine 138lb 9oz taken from peg four on pellet and maggot fished close in.

Runner-up Sammy McSpadden had 124lb 6oz followed by Colin Begbie on 115lb 3oz.
