The barbel have been conspicuous by their absence at just about all the noted hotspots for several weeks, but thankfully a drop of extra water in the River Nene has seen some much improved action over the past week.

Lots of barbel to 6lb have been taken from the locks at Orton while Alwalton has seen several good fish taken from the backwater and main river.

The best action, however, has come from the Castor area where double figure fish have been taken recently topped by a fine looking 14lb specimen taken by Peterborough DAA bailiff Mark Smith.

It was his biggest barbel for two seasons and the first double of the season
