Peterborough Civic Society is delighted to learn from your report (“North Westgate plan joy” 25 Dec 2014) that firm plans to develop North Westgate are expected at last.
Peterborough is continuing to develop as a fine city with significant investment by the city council and private business.
Yet close to the city centre is a large area of temporary car parks, boarded-up properties and vacant plots that seems to have been blighted for almost 20 years.
Comprehensive redevelopment is long overdue.
The Civic Society and, we believe, an overwhelming proportion of the people of Peterborough, look forward to new homes, shops, restaurants and offices and hopefully a new multi-screen cinema occupying what is currently a sad and forgotten quarter of our city.
Peterborough needs to build on the current investment in traffic calming of Bourges Boulevard which will make access to the railway station a lot easier.
The recently completed Waitrose store shows the level of investment that a major company is making in the city- a new cinema in the heart of the city could be the first step in re-generating the North Westgate area.
