Witnesses sought to accident in which 62-year-old man died when his car hit a wall

A 62-year-old man died after the blue Nissan Micra he was driving hit a low wall in Wharf Road, about 100 yards from the town bridge, just before 3am on Saturday, August 22.

The collision itself is being investigated by the East Midlands Serious Collision Investigation Unit, overseen by the IPCC.

Shortly before the collision police officers had approached the car at a junction in Brazenose Lane, Stamford.

The IPCC’s independent investigation is looking at the interaction between police and the man to establish if that had any bearing on the events that followed.

IPCC investigators are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision or noticed the Nissan Micra or its driver beforehand. They also want to talk to anyone who saw police contact with the driver between 2am and 3am near the taxi rank in Broad Street or at the junction of St Paul’s Street and Brazenose Lane.

IPCC investigators will be visiting Stamford next week to put up appeal boards as they look for people who can help their enquiries.
