Lightning brings end to Easter heatwave and causes house fire in Spalding

The warm Easter weekend was brought to an end with lightning strikes in and around Peterborough last night (Sunday).

A barbecue weekend (in our homes, anyway) saw people sitting out in their gardens and using green spaces in the city while sticking to social distancing rules.

But last night saw an outbreak of lightning, including in Newborough as shown by photos sent from Christian Worley to the Peterborough Telegraph.

Moreover, a fire crew from Spalding was called out at 9pm to a roof fire in Ambleside Drive which Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service said was caused by a lightning strike.

A spokesperson said there was moderate fire damage to a loft and the contents inside.

Nobody was reported to be injured.

The Met Office is forecasting cooling temperatures today, with a top temperature of nine Celsius in Peterborough.
