A woman who has dedicated years of her life volunteering in the community has been awarded an MBE.

Dr Jayshree Mehta (66) was awarded the honour for services to the community and Community Cohesion in Peterborough.

Dr Mehta, who is president, Bharat Hindu Samaj, the Hindu Temple and chair woman of the Sangam Indian Women’s Association, said: “I am really proud and very flattered.

“I received the letter a month ago, and had to read it a few times to take it all in.

“I have always done what I wanted to do with volunteering, and never wanted anything back.

“I would like to know who nominated me for the award to say thank you. I don’t have a clue as to who it was who thought I was worthy of it.

“It has been difficult to keep it a secret - I have wanted to shout it from the rooftops, but have not even been able to tell my daughter.

“I think I will be telling a lot of people, and having a bit of a celebration.”
