Conservative Mr Porter, councillor for Spalding St Mary’s ward, was named in the list announced by Downing Street today. It is thought his official title will be Lord Porter of Spalding.

Coun Porter, who is chairman of the Local Government Association (LGA) said: “I’m clearly proud to receive this recognition. But while it may be me that is receiving this honour it’s really a testament to the hard work of colleagues in South Holland District Council, the LGA and those across local government who day in and day out dedicate their working lives to making our communities better places to live.

“From protecting vulnerable children and adults, to keeping our bins emptied and streets clean, local government has a lot to be proud of.

“I will strive to be a strong voice and keen advocate for local government in the House of Lords. And those who know me and think this may change me, can rest assured that I’ll still be just Gary.”

Also on the list is foreign secretary William Hague, former cabinet ministers David Blunkett, Alistair Darling, Peter Hain and Tessa Jowell.
