Will The Flying Scotsman make it to Peterborough after breakdown?

The Flying Scotsman was forced to abandon its visit to Scarborough yesterday, Monday February 23, after a spring was damaged.

Having undergone a 10 year multi-million pound restoration project the historic engine was due to make its inaugural run from London King’s Cross to York, via Peterborough, on Thursday.

However, this newspaper understands The Flying Scotsman was also due to pass through the city on its southbound journey today, Tuesday February 23, a trip which is now in doubt.

The locomotive is due to make its inaugural run on Thursday, February 25. The outward journey from London Kings Cross is scheduled to leave at 7:40am, arriving at York at approximately 12:30pm, meaning the famous engine should be in Peterborough at around 9am - broken springs allowing.

It will pass through again on June 18 on its way back to London, after making its way from King’s Cross, through Peterborough, then Spalding, Sleaford, Lincoln, Gainsborough and Grantham, before returning along the East Coast main line.

Restoration of the locomotive started in 2004 at the National Railway Museum in York, when it was bought for the nation.
