The male driver has been taken to Peterborough City Hospital with what police said are serious, but not life threatening injuries.

The air ambulance attended the scene but was not needed.

Laura Neilson told this newspaper: “I was driving up the other side of the A47 presumably five minutes or so after it happened and it looked pretty serious, but there’s no crashed vehicles on the road so I think someone may be in the ditch.”

A significant number of emergency services are at the scene.

Peterborough Telegraph reader @barrierfreeman added: “Looks like something left the road. 3 fire engines, 3-5 ambulances, 7+ police cars, 2-3 doctors cars.”

Sue Napier added: “Couldn’t see any cars, but police climbing down into the bushes at the side of the road. Most emergency vehicles I have ever seen in one place - hope they are ok.”

Queues are back to junction 15 at Nene Parkway.

Police said that they do not know how long the road will have to remain closed but it is likely to take some hours to clear the scene which may affect rush hour in the city.
